PRESENTED BY:
Welcome to the month of August where the football off-season turns into camp season then we hit the schedule later this month. There is a lot to be accomplished between now and when the game whistle blows. Here are a few week #1 games across Siouxland that have my attention!
AUGUST 29 (THURSDAY)
GLENWOOD @ SC EAST: This is the official season opener in Siouxland as the Black Raiders will look to avenge last year's opening loss (28-24). Junior QB Cal Jepsen made his varsity debut behind center on the road in last year's contest which saw him pass for (347) yards and (2) touchdowns. Senior RB Myles Wegher had a good game on the ground with (73) yards and took a screen pass (99) yards to the house. Glenwood graduated some key pieces on offense with QB Kayden Anderson who passed for (1,903) yards and (14) touchdowns a season ago and WR Payton Longmeyer who had (69) receptions for (903) yards and (10) touchdown receptions will need to be replaced.
AUGUST 30 (FRIDAY)
SIOUX CENTER @ WEST LYON: This game last year was won by West Lyon (14-2). West Lyon is a team that I am extremely high on this fall. The Wildcats return some playmakers with senior Jaxan Huyser (55.5) tackles and (11) TFL, senior Tate Hawf (779) yards rushing and (14) scores, junior OL Bryce Koch 6-3 (275) and senior QB Bryson Childress (864) yards passing and threw for (11) scores return for the Cats. The Warriors will be looking to replace several key seniors including University of Kansas recruit Carson Bruhn at TE.
AUGUST 30 (FRIDAY)
LEMARS GEHLEN @ HINTON: This contest was a (10-0) fist-fight in week one last season won by the Blackhawks. The two teams combined passed for (58) yards. This game was all about defense and field position. The Blackhawks return some really solid seniors in Gabe Anderson, Jacob Bishop and Kyle Leary. Senior to be Kale Pearson rushed for (120) yards in the game last year and returns to the Jays offensive huddle this season.
AUGUST 30 (FRIDAY)
BISHOP HEELAN @ CARROLL KUEMPER: This game last fall was the season opener for both teams and the Crusaders held off Kuemper (22-19) thanks to a second half defensive shutout by the Crusader defense. The Crusaders trailed at halftime 19-14 but outscored the Knights 8-0 in the second half. The Crusaders lost some incredible seniors from their march to the UNI Dome and state runner-up finish a season ago. One big time player returns in junior Kasen Thomas 6-2 (200) Athlete (56) tackles and (17.5) TFL will impact the game on both sides of the football. The Crusaders will look to replace University of Arizona recruit Quinn Olson who was the engine behind the team success in 2023. The Knights return junior QB Brock Badding who threw for an impressive (2,063) yards and (30) touchdowns as a sophomore.
