The Black Raiders are set to take the field this Thursday 8/29 against the Glenwood Rams have split the last two contests with the Black Raiders. Head Coach Mike Winklepleck is entering his third season as the head man and has in my opinion the most talented roster during his tenure this season. The Rams are looking to replace some key departures on offense and it will be interesting to see how they adapt in playing many new faces.
Sioux City East Junior QB Cal Jepsen made his varsity debut behind center on the road in last year's contest which saw him pass for (347) yards and (2) touchdowns. Senior RB Myles Wegher had a good game on the ground with (73) yards and took a screen pass (99) yards to the house. Glenwood graduated some key pieces on offense with QB Kayden Anderson who passed for (1,903) yards and (14) touchdowns a season ago and WR Payton Longmeyer who had (69) receptions for (903) yards and (10) touchdown receptions will need to be replaced on the outside.
The Black Raider defense returns junior LB Jacob Breyfogle 6-2 (210) is looking to follow up a (52.5) tackle season as a sophomore. All-District CB Dayne Milton 5-11 (185) veteran is back in the secondary as is sophomore athlete Kasen Clayborne 6-3 (210) who also earned all-district honors a year ago. Junior DT Colin Pittenger 6-1 (230) returns to DT and junior DE Jack Ohman 6-5 (220) will work at one end spot and will help anchor the defensive front.
ANALYSIS: I look for the Black Raiders to control this game early and should be able to get great balance on offense with the intermediate passing game of Jepsen and the running game with Wegher inside to be effective. I anticipate the Black Raider defense setting the tone and forcing some short fields for the offense to take advantage. Keep a close eye on the return game for the Black Raiders as junior Louden Grimsley could shake loose on a kick return.
