Before the calendar officially flips to October, we get to slip in one last September kickoff this Thursday when Waukee NW (2-3) will battle SC East (3-2) in a key homecoming clash for the Black Raiders. The Black Raiders find themselves in a two game skid after opening the season 3-0. The Wolves check in off of two straight wins including a shutout of SC West last Friday night.
The Wolves started the season with losses to Des Moines Valley, Dowling Catholic and South East Polk. Yo,....how do you get a deck cards like that? SC East is trying to find an offense that has seemingly vanished over the last (9) quarters as they have only reached the end-zone one time. "We have had some poor execution on offense and at the same time have faced some pretty solid defenses," stated head coach Brian Webb.
Black Raider senior QB Luke Longval is capable of rallying the troops. Longval has completed (57%) of his passes for (913) yards and (8) scores. Sustaining drives with help from the running game will be important so the Black Raider passing game can get settled in. Senior RB Tyson Helseth-Bryan has racked up (208) yards on the ground and Davante Simmons has shown well with (18) carries for (125) yards. Brecken Schossow missed last week's game due to injury and his status for this week is unknown. Junior Kelynn Jacobsen has performed well catching (25) passes for (370) yards and (2) touchdowns and senior Taejon Jones has (16) receptions for (238) yards.
"We are a little banged up and will be missing some starters who will not be playing due to injury. The Wolves have a ton of depth and a big roster. We will have to stay healthy and be able to stop big plays by them. We have to be able to move the ball consistently on offense," said head coach Webb.
The Wolves led offensively by QB Carson Renken (409) yards passing and (4) touchdowns are starting to find their groove on offense after facing an incredible early season schedule. Senior RB Tanner Spyksma has rushed for (345) yards and four scores. The main receiving target on offense is junior WR Brady Grisham (11) catches for (115) yards. The Wolves defense is led by senior Sinjin Smith (27) tackles and Griffin Gammell (24) tackles.
The Black Raider defense features some solid defensive linemen with DE Nick Wells (37) tackles and (11.5) TFL and junior DT Cale Pittenger (26) tackles and (9) TFL. The Black Raider defense will have to force some turnovers to come out on top. I know it is a short week but if the Black Raiders are going to flip the switch..... now is the time. This should be a very good ball game!
